summary:
This new imaging study from the USA examines the
differences in MRI appearances between Caucasian Americans and African
Americans with MS which might explain the more aggressive form of the
disease seen amongst African Americans. The authors found that there was no
significant difference between the two ethnic groups in global and regional
brain volumes but the lesion volume in African Americans was significantly
greater. The authors therefore conclude that higher lesion accumulation
rather than loss of brain volume is likely to account for the more rapid
disease progression in African Americans.
